The Gabriel Marcel Institute of Philosophy Sydney exists to sustain the living spirit of philosophical inquiry that animated Gabriel Marcel's Friday salons in Paris and Jean Wahl's Collège philosophique — spaces where philosophy could be experimental, dedicated to a philosophy of immediate experience and lived reality, of “towardness,” of “a felt sense,” and of the transcendent.

About

Now in its fourth year, the Institute convenes an annual conference and publishes The Marcellian, a peer-reviewed journal that explores the intersections of existentialism, phenomenology, and religious thought. Our work is animated by the constellation of thinkers who gathered in these circles — Gaston Bachelard, Emmanuel Levinas, Paul Ricoeur, Simone de Beauvoir, Jean-Paul Sartre, Susan Sontag, Nicolas Berdyaev, and Jean Wahl himself, among others — and by the conviction that philosophy must engage the whole person: the artist, the citizen, the seeker, and the practitioner.

Faith, for Marcel, was never merely a topic for discussion; it was a lived reality enacted through spiritual practices, communal devotion, and concrete acts of fidelity and hope. In this spirit, the Institute welcomes not only scholarly reflection but also the voices of practitioners, artists, and contemplatives — those who embody the mysteries that philosophy and the arts seek to articulate.

Through our ongoing partnership with colleagues at Gabriel Marcel Society hosted at Rockhurst University in the U.S., and the Association Présence de Gabriel Marcel in Paris we aim—as Wahl did—to bridge Francophone and Anglophone traditions, bringing the practitioner’s, open-ended philosophy into dialogue with contemporary questions in ethics, politics, and the spiritual life.
